A ZPL (Zebra Programming Language) file is a plain-text label definition used by Zebra thermal printers. It contains commands like ^XA (start label), ^FO (field origin), ^BC (barcode), and ^XZ (end label). Every Amazon FBA shipment label, UPS label, and FedEx label you print from a Zebra printer is generated as ZPL.
Windows and macOS have no native ZPL renderer. ZPL is a printer language — it's designed to be understood by Zebra hardware, not by desktop operating systems. To view a ZPL file, you need a ZPL viewer like Zentralabel or Labelary.
Yes. Zentralabel's REST API accepts ZPL via HTTP POST and returns PDF, PNG, or SVG. You can integrate it directly into your WMS (ShipBob, 3PL Central, NetSuite) or write a simple webhook that converts labels as they're generated.
On the Growth plan (50,000 labels/month), you can batch convert thousands of files per job. On Vendor (200,000/month), conversion limits exceed the throughput of most 3PLs. Enterprise plans have no limits.
Zentralabel supports the full ZPL II command set including Code 128, Code 39, QR Code, DataMatrix, GS1-128, all built-in fonts, graphic boxes, field rotation, and graphic field embedding. Rare industrial commands (e.g., RFID encoding) are rendering-only and don't trigger hardware.
